How to Start a Children’s Tutoring Business

If you have children or enjoy spending time with other people’s children, and are looking for a way to make some extra money, you could think about setting up a children’s tutoring business.

If you are good at a particular subject such as maths, which many children struggle with, you could be in demand. And of course, if you were a teacher in the past, you’d be an ideal candidate for this type of work.

With school classrooms becoming more crowded, parents are worried about their children’s learning and afraid they may be falling behind. As a result, many of them are on the lookout for a tutor who can give them one on one support. Private tutoring may also be necessary to help a child gain a place at a particular school or college.

Also, more and more parents are now homeschooling their children, but need to find someone to teach the subjects they are not familiar with themselves. This is also a good moms’ business, as you can tutor other children alongside your own child.
You don’t need any specific training, but a degree in the relevant subject would be an advantage. And you will need to get on well with children and teenagers, be patient and have the ability to explain things clearly.

Tutors often work in the child’s home, but if you have plenty of space you might start a tutoring club, where you can work with a group of children, thus reducing the cost for parents. You will need to check out the regulations for working with children in the area in which you live.

You will need textbooks, workbooks and various other learning materials, depending on the subjects you are teaching and the ages of the children. A computer with internet access is important these days.

You will also need to have a basic knowledge of how to set up a business, such as record keeping and information on filing taxes.

To begin with, you can tell people about your tutoring service and you are likely to get your first students through your own network of contacts, for example friends, church and other social groups. If you do a good job, you will get plenty of referrals and won’t have to spend much on advertising.
